There are no words really, but instead feelings of how much he meant to so many of us in the musical community and beyond. Bill was a complete musician in everyway. His talent for not only consistently supporting any music he was immersed in with great energy, but to also generate a weave of creativity that contributed so much more to the music in his role as a bassist and intrepid improviser. His passionate input right up until the end with the new music we were playing made me realize his excellent arranging skills as well. Drummer Chris Poudrier and myself always welcomed Bill's ideas and insights into some of the bass solo sections that we ended up using. He will be deeply missed, but also so fondly remembered. I take some solace in knowing that there will be upcoming album releases of Bill's work in the months and years to come to contribute further to his legacy as a consummate musician and human being.
Here is a link to a remembrance of Bill in Bass Musician Magazine
https://bassmusicianmagazine.com/2023/05/remembering-bass-player-bill-miele/

jim robitailletag:jimrobitaille.com,2005:Post/69247642022-03-17T11:53:42-04:002022-08-08T15:57:01-04:00Jim Robitaille Trio June 29th, at The Music Room
Get Tickets

BY JAY N. MILLER | FOR THE PATRIOT LEDGER

We always like to do a year-end list of the best jazz albums, because while it may not be the most popular style, there are still electrifying artists breaking new ground or performing and composing in established forms that deserve wider notice. The Boston area is also of course home to several music schools where jazz is a big part of the curriculum if not the total focus. And our proximity to New York City means we also have the chance to be exposed to reams of new music coming from that jazz center. And with 2020 finding many of us with more spare time than ever, the prospect of new and exciting music to hear — and having the time to savor it — made it seem like a very good year for jazz. And don’t forget, since many of these musicians are locally based, or at least on the East Coast, it should be easy to find them performing in our area, once the world opens up again.

SPACE CYCLES by JIM ROBITAILLE TRIO

Guitarist Robitaille is a New Bedford resident who teaches at UMass-Dartmouth, and has several fine albums on the South Coast’s excellent “Whaling City Sound label. On this one, joined by Providence bassist Bill Miele, and drummer Chris Poudrier of Lakeville, he provides another brightly effervescent sample of his marvelous technique. There’s a swinging take on “Baubles, Bangles and Beads,” but also more adventurous stuff, like “Transitions,” which manages to be infectious while traversing all 12 keys. The title cut achieves the unlikely goal of being both astral and funky, for a most dazzling sonic journey. (Whaling City Sound)

LIBERTY by DAYNA STEPHENS TRIO

Tenor sax player, and Berklee College of Music alumnus, Stephens heads an unusual trio here, with just bassist Ben Street and drummer Eric Harland, but it is based on some of his role models like Sonny Rollins, Charlie Haden, and Joe Henderson, who also recorded in this format. The key to Stephens’ work here is its accessibility, as the rare trio format doesn’t get in the way of intoxicating fun. Key quote: “Creating music just for musicians does not appeal to me,” and Stephens is determined to create jazz that casual music fans can embrace. His own “Loosy Goosy” is one fine example of that, and his “Faith Leap” is actually a re-imaging of John Coltrane’s classic “Giant Steps.(Contagious Music)

THE PROSPECTOR by BRUNO RABERG TRIO

Boston bassist Raberg enlisted Austin McMahon on drums and Allan Chase on saxes for his own foray into the sax-trio format, but this is also a jazz record with broad appeal. Raberg admits his own musical roots were first in rock, and then jazz and fusion, and that omnivorous musical appetite is obvious in his infectious music. “Isometric Rotation” uses mirrored melodies, but makes that technical feat seem intriguing. “Triloka” weaves in some flavors from the music of India, while the lovely “Lockleigh” has a Celtic aura underlying it.
Boston pianist Ray is joined here by his fellow Berklee College of Music faculty member Terri Lyne Carrington drums and bassist John Patitucci for this enjoyable mix of covers and originals. Ray is a much in-demand pianist, and has played with a wide variety of pop and jazz artists, and his versatility is reflected in this music. There are some fabulous covers of rock songs, like the Rolling Stones’ “Paint It Black,” and Billy Preston’s “Nothing From Nothing,” but also stellar jazz numbers like Carrington’s tribute to Wayne Shorter, “Samsara,” and Ray’s own delectable “Gone, Not Forgotten.” An all star trio by any measure, they deliver a superb album.
PISTILS by RAJIV JAYAWEERA

There are some exotic song titles on this album from drummer Jayaweera, a Sri Lankan native, and this work was done with help from the Australian Council for the Arts, but it was recorded in Rhinebeck, New York. And honestly, despite the exotic flavors, most of the music crafted by the core quintet (with one tune having vocalist Lara Bello) is simply edgy post-bop jazz. Jayaweera is a talented composer and arranger, as shown on the smooth midtempo “Galadari,” or the elegiac ballad “Nilus.” These tunes don’t merely jump from one solo to another, but present the melodies as stories, unfolding in a charming way, and the lyricism behind “The Elephant,” and especially pianist Aaron Parks, is breathtaking.
NEW YORK PARADOX by OMER AVITAL & QANTAR

Bassist and composer Omer Avital is one of the most accomplished bandleaders in NYC, often called ‘The Israeli Charlie Mingus’ for his adventurous work. In the 1990s he led a sextet that included four saxophones. This is his second album with the quintet Qantar, which includes four other Israeli musicians who came to NYC to pursue jazz, including Alexander Levin on tenor sax, Asaf Yuria on tenor and soprano sax, Eden Ladin on piano, and Ofri Nehemya on drums. This is the most engaging and outstanding ensemble work of the year, with arrangements that flow naturally with plenty of energy. Avital, who’s often played at the West Village jazz club Small’s, also founded the venue Wilson Live in Bushwick, Brooklyn, where much of this music was crafted in rehearsals and jams. There’s such kinetic force in “Shabazi,” it could be a rock song, yet the lilting ballad “Zohar Smiles” is no less entrancing. Who can resist “Just Like the River Flows,” a relentless yet soothing epic where pianist Ladin’s evocative touch is the exquisite core. (Zamzama Records)

RETURN TRIP by MATT MORAN TRIO

This is yet another unique trio format, with Moran on vibes, Gary Versace on Hammond B-3 organ, and Tom Rainey on drums. Moran is a Berklee College grad who got his master’s at The New England Conservatory, and he was voted a Rising Star in the 2014 Downbeat magazine critics’ poll on vibes. But in another persona, he has also played drums for two decades for the brass band Slavic Soul Party. Moran works in Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute, and also helps provide music education at Sing Sing prison. A lot of the music here is almost experimental, but quite interesting, such as on “Spring,” where moody vibes and organ seem to frame the drummer’s lead lines. “Chord Conversation” is intriguing, as it sounds like the players are going in three different melodic directions, yet it all is in harmony. And the mystery vamp underlying “Effish” could be the theme song for my next favorite film noir. (Diskonife)

RHAPSODIZE by ELDAR DJANGIROV

It seems like we get a new album from Eldar every year, and this is the 12th one from the Russian émigré, so it shouldn’t be surprising that the former child prodigy is now 33. Djangirov came to the United States, Kansas City to be precise, at the age of ten, already an awe-inspiring pianist, who was playing on NPR by age 12. He’s graduated from USC, relocated to Los Angeles, and continues to wow jazz fans with his mind-blowing technique. On tunes like “Anthemic” you might believe he was Art Tatum’s doppelganger, but he can also be tender and evocative, as on the cover of “Willow Weep For Me.” You can’t deny the propulsive force behind “In July,” or the pure power of the title cut, but even on lively numbers like “Blackjack,” Djangirov’s mature mastery of nuance is never overshadowed.
WATERSHED by JOHN STEIN

Kansas City native Stein came to Berklee College of Music to study jazz at age 30, and after post-grad work at Harvard, returned as a professor. The guitarist intended this album to mark his stepping away from the classroom to devote more time to creating his own music. Although he lives in Jamaica Plain, Stein’s 15th album was recorded in Sao Paolo, Brazil with four musicians from that area. Stein wrote seven of the dozen tunes here, but all showcase his mastery of tone and melodic nuance, while the arrangements give plenty of room to his bandmates. The sprightly “Rio Escuro” is a practically a duet with alto flutist Teco Cardoso, while pianist Daniel Grajew drives the charge of “Kobe.” Cardoso, on alto sax, gets to strut on Joe Henderson’s “The Kicker,” while “Brazilian Hug” is a buttery samba that relies on the whole quintet. Stein cites Wes Montgomery as an influence, and that’s obvious on his beautiful take on “A Taste of Honey.” There’s a terrific combo sound on Pat Martino’s “Cisco,” and a great bass solo from Frank Herzberg, with nifty drum accents from Ze Eduardo Nazario there and all over the record. That’s Stein’s secret weapon; he’s a leader who shares the spotlight wonderfully. (Whaling City Sound)

BLENDED LINEAGE by DAVID BIXLER BIXTET

Saxophonist Bixler had been out of action for a few years after his son suffered a traumatic brain injury. Based in New York City, Bixler is also the Director of Jazz Studies at Bowling Green University. This work was commissioned as a musical look at tribes, or the groupings people create for themselves. Bixler tackled it with a core quintet-plus-string quartet, for a nine-piece band. The four movements approach the theme from the standpoint of the four groups Bixler sees himself belonging to, first as a human (“Origins”), then as a proud Wisconsin native (”Motherland”), then as a NYC musician toiling more for the love of his art than the meager money (“Trenches”), and finally as a spiritual being (“My Soul Swoons Slowly”). The string quartet gives it an orchestral air on the first movement, while Jon Cowherd’s piano provides a melodic center, and Bixler and trumpeter Mike Rodriguez add soaring lines in unison. “Motherland” becomes more light-hearted, the horns diverging on their own paths of joy and happiness. “Trenches,” the ode to struggling musicians, has a sort of yin-and-yang quality, soaring horn lines over solid repeated themes, as if depicting how creative fire must be balanced with hard work. The final movement, “My Soul Swoons Slowly,” whose name derives from a James Joyce novel (“The Dead”) finds Bixler’s sax exploring over a lush midtempo groove, that is, indeed, soulful and transporting.
“Space Cycles” is the new album from jazz guitarist Jim Robitaille, who cut the album with his trio that includes Bill Miele on electric bass and Chris Poudrier on drums.

Guitarist Jim Robitaille was having a busy year, with the release last October of “A View From Within,” which featured him playing with saxophonist Dave Liebman and members of Liebman’s band, and the April 24 release of “Space Cycles” with Robitaille’s own trio. And of course that was all squeezed in between teaching at UMass-Dartmouth, where his work on the faculty includes teaching jazz guitar and leading jazz ensembles, which often allow the students to jam with visiting jazz luminaries.

Robitaille lives in New Bedford, so it’s natural he’s on Whaling City Sound, the superb jazz label that Neal Weiss founded several years ago. The other members of the trio are also area natives, with bassist Bill Miele living in Providence, and drummer Chris Poudrier a Lakeville resident.

“I had met Neal years ago, and knew him as a fan of the music long before he started the label,” said Robitaille from his New Bedford home. “Anybody in the New England area and beyond knew Neal for that. It’s great having Whaling City right here and everything they do all comes from his passion and love of music.”

Robitaille had been looking forward to a tour of Europe for three weeks in April, including a recording date in Vienna where he’d be accompanying a jazz trumpeter. All of those dates were canceled or postponed and he was devoting himself to promoting the new record. The trio had the foresight to make a couple of videos during their sessions, so Robitaille was working with media and radio stations to offer those videos and do all the usual work to get the word out.

But as April turned into May, Robitaille’s world encountered more upheaval as his mother contracted COVID-19 and died near the end of the month. That forced him to cancel a couple of online appearances and since his last live performance was March 13, he said he’s eager to get back in the action.

“I had a nice month or so of pre-promotion for the April 24 album release but then the last month has been crazy,” said Robitaille. “I think we’ve all been writing a lot and trying to get back to regular life. The ensembles are a big part of what I do at the college and those are not happening the rest of this term or in the fall. There are a lot of cuts and concentration on the mandatory classes needed for degrees, so the pandemic has affected a lot of things.”

While Robitaille has played with a variety of artists in a wide array of formats over the years, the trio is one of his most comfortable settings. That’s evident on the new record, where the threesome displays that sort of musical telepathy that proves they are simpatico in every way.

“I’ve been working with Bill and Chris way longer in other settings, with different artists over the years,” said Robitaille. “We had done a lot of work in a quartet with a pianist that was booked a lot. But at the jam sessions at UMass-Dartmouth, I encourage the students to come up and jam and a lot of those sessions are done with my trio. This record has kind of come out of that, but the truth is that we’ve known each other long before that.

“This album came out of concerts and club dates we’d played,” Robitaille said. “We do have something special, where, when you’re in the music you feel like you’re tapping into each other. Everybody is in tune collectively, so that the music is conversational, reactionary in a way. You feel like you know where somebody is going next. We’ve had a lot of time developing that feeling.”

The new album certainly showcases how much variety a talented trio can deliver, from the bright and enticing “Natural Selection” where the fluidity of Robitaille’s playing is just magnificent, to a lightly swinging cover of “Baubles, Bangles and Beads,” to the mid-tempo canter of “February 12th,” where the trio takes us on a subtle melodic trip, anchored by Robitaille’s sterling chords. “Transitions” is a remarkable piece and not just because the liner notes tell us it travels through all 12 keys, but more because its sprightly melody carries it along so effortlessly those technical aspects are secondary.

“That’s how I really meant that song to turn out,” said Robitaille. “You never really compose from a technical standpoint and I think all of that is working in the background. What’s guiding ‘Transitions’ is the melody, which is actually very simplistic, almost sing-song. But the guiding force for me is always melody — it all comes from a lyrical element, because I sing all of this stuff when I’m composing. I think it’s an involuntary response — it’s impossible for me to hear music and not get to sing.”

The title cut, “Space Cycles,” begins with tentative notes, two- and three-note chords, with the drums percolating underneath. A bass solo is the catalyst that propels it into a gliding jazz-fusion melody that is utterly transporting.

″‘Space Cycles’ has two main movements; the first is very tight, with the rhythm section delivering funk in a different way, and then the second part is more contrasting that,” Robitaille noted. “But then we have bass and drum solos, so really it has four sections. But there is a kind of life force to it — sometimes when writing, the challenge is just to get out of the way. I had written that first section really fast, but probably had about six versions of the second part, because I never was satisfied with them. This one is the version we had been playing live most often, and we have finally settled on it.”

The album’s two ballads, the romantic reverie “When We Passed” and the whimsical “Never Never Land,” have Robitaille playing on his nylon-stringed acoustic guitar, yet with the kind of understated majesty that marked Wes Montgomery’s best.

“I have studied classical guitar, and I always had a love of Brazilian music,” Robitaille said of the acoustic tunes. “It can be tricky playing with drums and acoustic guitar, because you can only get so loud. We can make it work in the studio but it is hard to do it live and find that balance.”

Probably the most commented on number is Robitaille’s cover of the Beatles’ “Here There and Everywhere,” where the melody is recognizable, but the trio performs it in such a way as to let it breathe, in an open-ended, soaring kind of jazz take.

“We did that in one or two takes, and there’s no real arrangement — it’s just how we felt,” Robitaille explained. “I think it helps if you bring in some pop, or standards. It helps if you can introduce music fans to a tune that might be more universally known or sound familiar to more people. You’re widening the scope of the jazz repertoire for your audience. If they like that, they might start to think about your other tunes that they might not know. We almost want to obliterate the idea of genres, and appreciate it as just music. And especially on an album, you want to have your own originals dovetail with stuff like that, so it all flows.”

Robitaille’s different voicings on guitar are more incredible when you remember he doesn’t use much in the way of effects, or added electronics, yet he can sound like keyboards or horns, and always has impeccable touch.

“I’m probably in the middle there,” he said, laughing. “I know some players just go straight into an amplifier. I do use reverb, and an in-and-out modulation delay — kind of like a sustain effect. And I usually use an overdrive — I think early Charlie Christian or Wes Montgomery always have that when they’re digging in. But I look at it like a saxophone reed. I use it to get a more reedy sound, not really distortion, but more for sustain. My sound is constantly evolving, because I think your sound is most important; your listeners’ response and emotions are all triggered by that sound.”

Robitaille said he is hoping to take part in some streaming online shows soon, and one of the venues that’s been discussed is Weymouth’s Article 15 brewery.
jim robitailletag:jimrobitaille.com,2005:Post/62909652020-04-22T17:18:50-04:002020-04-22T17:19:50-04:00Jim Robitaille Trio Title Track Session Video
Here is the Jim Robitaille Trio title track session video, and the featured track session video for the new album Space Cycles on WCS.

Jazz News

4/24: Jim Robitaille’s "Space Cycles" escorts us to beautiful and unexpected places

After a brief interlude in a group format, Jim Robitaille is back inside the sparse and generous spaces of his trio. Flanked by Bill Miele on electric bass and Chris Poudrier on drums, Robitaille sounds as if he's returned home after being away for a while. Originally, the trio evolved out of a jam session series Robitaille ran out of UMass Dartmouth and today it has certainly become a part of his musical DNA.

Like most of his previous trio work, Space Cycles explores the lexicon of post-bop jazz, but also features a variety of roots and branches. The sonic spectrum spans delicate ballads and energetic funk. The recording features seven Robitaille originals along with three covers—the jazz standard "Baubles, Bangles and Beads, " "Never Never Land" (from the 1954 Broadway musical Peter Pan), and the Beatles' "Here, There and Everywhere." The canvas is vast and allows for the trio to paint in vibrant colors as it spreads out before them.

From the moody opener, "Natural Selection, " to the closing, epic ensemble jam "Chance Meeting, " the session is dazzling, even sublime. The colors throughout these arrangements pulse and glow, while Robitaille's guitar tone—born in the legato tradition of names like Hall, Abercrombie, and Scofield—articulates a palette of explosive creativity. At his side, Miele and Poudrier support Robitaille's work with sturdy, confident rhythm and gentle explorations of their own. Miele shines frequently, in spots such as his melodic solos on "Transitions" and "When We Passed." Poudrier is loose on "Baubles, Bangles, and Beads, " and he comes out swinging on "Chance Meeting, " helping the trio to close out the session with freewheeling brio. It is a fitting end to an album that feels like a journey, punctuated by exhilarating straightaways, gorgeous viewpoints, and chilled out rest areas.

Like a flowing, casual conversation among old friends, the comfort level of the musicians here feels brisk, amusing, impressive, and, above all, satisfying to hear. Robitaille is coming into a new level of expression. His musical scope has evolved, as has the tone from his guitar, leaping over traditional jazz into the great and jazzy unknown, a place where Robitaille, with the help of his longtime accompanists, clearly feels wonderfully familiar.

By Sean McCarthy, Contributing Writer

Six years ago UMass Dartmouth Music Professor Jim Robitaille had a realization — if young students at UMD weren’t able to attend performances by world class jazz musicians he would bring the musicians to them.

He hopes it’s an education that could take them around the world.

In 2011 Robitaille created the Performance Jam Session Series — a group of concerts held at UMD with the aim of inspiring and educating students by exposing them to high caliber performers, while also giving the students an opportunity to take to the stage and explore and experience the live setting for themselves. Robitaille’s thinking is that if you’re going to speak the universal language of music you should do it like they do it in the big cities, and these concerts are gigs of xx, training the young talents to play on jazz stages around the world.

Each concert has two components — the first performance features accomplished jazz performers that Robitaille has brought in from around a Boston-to-New York radius. Each lineup and song choices vary depending on the show. These performances may be in formats of duos to quartets, and there may also be UMD professors sitting in on the sessions.

“We want the students to get inspired and comfortable with being onstage,” Robitaille says. “We also want them to learn to play with others, whether it’s in a supportive role or a soloing role.

“Most importantly these concerts expose students to the different dialects of jazz, the different artists, styles and instrumentation. Jazz is a music that is played around the world, whether it’s Eastern Europe, South America or Africa.”

“These events also function by giving young students the etiquette of what a jam session is like, even running it themselves,” Robitaille says.

“Seeing these top-notch musicians makes me hungry to play, it makes me want to practice even more,” says guitarist Ryan Stumpfler, a senior at UMD and a long-time participant in the performances.”

Drummer John Dalton has also been attending the concerts for four years. He says that he benefits not only by observing the performers on the UMD stage, but also by talking with the musicians after their performance, giving him a second education about the music industry.

“They’ll talk to you about performing but also about other aspects of being a musician,” Dalton says. “You can learn about the business of music and what life is like as a musician.”

“We live in a great region for jazz, we’re between the two cultural centers of Boston and New York,” Robitaille says. “But some young kids may not have the opportunity to get to these places or they can’t get in to clubs because of their age.”

The concerts are usually four-to-six per semester, based upon enrollment in the music program at the school. After hosting three events this semester they have two more scheduled — Wednesday, April 5, and Wednesday, April 12. The concerts start at 8 p.m. and are located in UMD’s CVPA Building. They are free and open to the public.
jim robitailletag:jimrobitaille.com,2005:Post/45307472016-12-30T09:11:29-05:002020-04-09T18:12:46-04:00Jim Robitaille Trio New Years Eve.
